Sex sells...we've all heard it! We know it, we see it everywhere, why would it surprise anyone?! Well this past week I attended a speaking on Human Trafficking in Thailand on May 1st, 2008. I have been in college for a few years now, being that I am 24 and i have a bunch of friends that have traveled the world, whether going abroad to further their education or to roam the world following their curiosity like a carrot...anyway so I know a handful of friends that have been to Thailand and over in that region of the world. There are many things that i have heard, and i am not sure it due to my friends or whether this is reality over there, but SEX and DRUGS are what i hear...oh and EVERYTHINGS CHEAP!
Well they weren't lying, because this lecture from Michelle Williams opened my mind to ideas that were beyond my normal belief. As much as in the back of my head i understood that there was prostitution in Thailand, it has never really bothered me because this happens everywhere all the time. Sure business men traveling in the area for the day/week/month arent coming into Chico regularly to drop some money for a good time escort...or are they? Although it is hard for me to connect with this situation halfway around the world, i feel like it is a mentality that needs to be changed, not neccesarily an action. The ideas that Michelle was putting out there, with the ease of access to these women and the low cost and what these women looked like. Michelle gave many examples of the working women in Thailand, and described them well. Michelle was enthralled at the reaction that society had towards this sort of action. Although the majority of the population looks down on these lewd acts, the Thai population seems to have an unnaturally positive beat to them, people do seem happy and content with what they have.
Michelle really did a great job explaining to everyone how the process went down, from beginning to end, and then furthermore explained the problem that causes this. We talked about how many men need to stop thinking inappropriately and looking at women as a sex object. Women do have a greater position here in the United States from my impression of Michelle’s perception. It seems as though women are just a commodity, willing and able to be bartered for at the price of a decent meal. I guess after everything was said and done in this speaking I did learn some stuff. I was surprised at just how far people will go for sex, and it is quite pathetic. If only everyone put as much time and effort into things to help the world, and not only themselves. It is a demented perspective on life I guess, but I guess it’s a raging industry down there, and all over the world…the worlds oldest profession, keeps on truckin’.
